Scotland’s Team Smith got their campaign off to a solid start at the Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships 2017 which got underway in St Gallen this morning, with a 7-3 win against Italy.

Skip Kyle Smith said: “Winning the opening match is a good confidence booster. We started off as we wanted to so we could get a feel of things. I thought we were pretty controlled throughout, though I had a sloppy last shot in the third end which gave them a two and in the fourth the other skip made two good draws with his last two shots which put us in a bit of bother. However we took a time out to decide on the right shot and scored a one there.

“Once we got our lead we peeled really well and we took any chances we had. It is always good to start like this which will help as we take on Austria tonight. They are a good team and not to be taken lightly as opponents, so we know we have to play well against them,” he said.

Austria lost their opening match 10-6 against defending champions Team Edin from Sweden.

Smith added: “To be honest training these last two weeks at the National Curling Academy we had reached the stage where we were raring to get going, so it has been great to take to the ice this morning and it is the best possible way to start.”

European bronze medallists Team Muirhead take on Sweden this afternoon at 1pm (GMT).
