Scotland’s Team Muirhead claimed their fifth consecutive win at the Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships in St Gallen by beating Turkey 8-3 this afternoon.

The victory, which never looked in doubt, has given the Scots a share of second place in the standings along with hosts Switzerland, who like Team Muirhead have been chosen as Olympic representatives in PyeongChang next year. Meanwhile Anna Hasselborg’s rink representing Sweden has already qualified for the play-offs in the event – so far mirroring Muirhead’s unbeaten run during the round robin phase of the championships last year.

Skip Eve Muirhead said after the game with Turkey: “They were a bit of an unknown quantity given we hadn’t played them before and it is fair to say they are a good technical team who have a lot of potential in the game.

“It is great see more emerging nations coming into the sport and I am sure they will have a good future,” she said.

“We played it very simple and nailed the key shots and it was a solid and clinical performance from the team, making all the draws and nose hits.”

Scotland face the Czech Republic tomorrow and hosts Switzerland which will undoubtedly have a noisy crowd behind them in the arena tomorrow.

Muirhead added: “We face two tough teams tomorrow, we are not planning on making any changes to our game and will go out there and continue to deliver solid performances.”

Scotland’s men Team Smith will play Team Ulsrud in their second game today at 6pm (GMT) this evening.
