European Championship Update

Posted on

Scotland’s curlers have experienced mixed results after a challenging first weekend at the European Championships hosted in Esbjerg, Denmark (20-28 November).

Team Muirhead recovered from an opening  2-7 defeat in the women’s event to hosts Denmark with a resounding 11-3 victory over Sweden. Returning to the ice for the third match today the Olympic bronze medallists started well with a thumping 8-1 win over Finland but later missed out to Russia, who secured a narrow 7-6 victory and in doing so have maintained their 100% win record so far which keeps them level with Denmark at the top of the standings.

Team Smith who are making their debut at a senior international event, have so far played three games losing their opening game 11-4 to Norway, the only men’s rink that is unbeaten to date.  The young Scottish quartet secured their first win of the championship against the Czech Republic 9-7, but today lost by that same margin to defending champions Sweden.

Team Muirhead play newcomers Hungary tomorrow, whilst Team Smith face Switzerland in the morning and the Netherlands – who have been promoted from last year’s B division - later in the day.
