Scotland’s Team Muirhead lost a tight match 9-7 to hosts Switzerland at an extra end but had already qualified for the semis earlier in the day, when they beat the Czech Republic 8-4 at the Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships in St Gallen.

In their penultimate game of the round robin phase the teams exchanged singles over the opening ends until the Swiss quartet had a steal of one at the fifth when Skip Eve Muirhead last’s stone failed to clear the house.

From there the teams exchanged two’s until the tenth end when Scotland with hammer claimed a single to take the game to an extra end. The host nation lifted by strong crowd support sealed their win with Tirinzoni’s last stone to claim a two and the match.

Skip Eve Muirhead said: “It was a good game and some of our shots were just the wrong side of an inch. At the third end all the angles were not on our side, but hey ho I am just disappointed as it was one of those games where it came down to the odd shot here and there.

“However the tough games will come down to the smallest of margins. This game came down to the last shot at the last end, but it is good to be tested and it keeps us sharp coming into the business end of the week,” she said.

Earlier in the day the Scots had cruised to their sixth consecutive victory in the tournament when they beat the Czech Republic to qualify for the play-off stages. They now have one more round robin match against Hungary tomorrow who are currently in the lower reaches of the standings.

However Scotland’s men Team Smith must win their last match against the Netherlands tomorrow in order to be sure to qualify for the semi finals after they lost out 9-4 to hosts Switzerland.
