Team Muirhead and Team Brewster Compete in Last Slam of the Season

Team Muirhead and Team Brewster will compete in the Grand Slam of Curling’s Humpty’s Champions Cup at WinSport Arena in Canada Olympic Park this week, which will mark the end of their 2016-17 season.

The newest competition on the Grand Slam circuit is invitation only to teams who have won Tour ranking events or select tournaments during this season and therefore has an impressive line-up providing stiff opposition for the title, with valuable World Curling Tour Order of Merit Points also up for grabs.

Team Brewster won the Perth Masters earlier this year to qualify and skip Tom Brewster hopes his team can carry the form that saw them finish third at last weekend’s European Masters into the tournament this week.

“We are really looking forward to playing in the Champions Cup, the arena looks great and our first game is tomorrow.

“We want to finish the season with a solid performance and we felt that we played well at St Gallen last week and with a little more luck along the way we could have been playing in the final instead of the third/fourth place play-off.

“Hopefully we can continue that form here and this will mark only the second time this season we have played the 5 rock rule. This is where our coach Mike Harris will be invaluable this week and we hope to use his knowledge and experience to help us make the right tactical decisions,” he said.

Brewster, who is the Manager for Curl Aberdeen and also organised the Aberdeen International at his venue will be joined by the winners of that title, Team Hardie who are the only debutants in the line-up.

World Championship bronze medallists Team Muirhead are the only Scots in the women’s event and skip Eve Muirhead is delighted to be included in this premier competition.

“I cannot believe it is the last event of the season already, it has flown by.

“The Champions Cup is a very prestigious event to be part of and our Tour event win in Basel qualified us. Every team here has won an event so it’s going to be a tough one!” she added.
