CARSON’S TURN TO BOOST SCOTTISH HOPES WITH BOUNCE BACK

A well judged hit and roll to lie three shots at the penultimate end and pile the pressure onto his Swiss opposite number saw Orrin Carson wrap up an important 8-3 win for his team as they got their play-off bid back on track at the World Junior Championships in Fussen.

It was an excellent performance by the teenage Scottish quartet of Carson, younger brother Logan, Archie Hyslop and Charlie Gibb, all the more so after they had suffered a heavy 9-3 defeat at the hands of China, their second loss in succession after they had won their first three matches.

The win took their record to four wins and two losses, matching that of compatriots Team Henderson, whose skip Fay Henderson was philosophical after she and teammates Robyn Munro, Holly Wilkie-Milne and Laura Watt suffered a 10-2 defeat to unbeaten Switzerland in their only match of day four.

“Obviously that was a bit of a tough game, although the scoreline didn’t really reflect the game, we just had a couple of missed chances and rubs that went the wrong way. We didn’t feel there was as much in it as the scoreline suggested,” she said.

“We’re just going to bin that and move on. We have Korea and Norway tomorrow.”

That looks set to be a crucial combination of matches against rivals for play-off places and having faced their opponents before, Henderson believes they can use that to advantage.

“Norway are fighting for a spot at the top of the table very closely with us, on four and two as well, so beating them would make a statement and Korea are sitting on three and three so a win over them would probably take them out of the equation for the play-offs as well.

“Two wins tomorrow would clearly put us in a very good position for reaching the play-offs.

“We have met the Koreans before and the Norwegian team has a few players similar to last year, so we can use that experience to hopefully tactically execute the game and we’re looking forward to it.

“We’re approaching the end of the round-robin and we’re still in a good position, so we need to remember that and just move on and keep some wins coming.”
