HENDERSON CLAIMS FIRST WIN AT WORLDS

An impressive performance in their second round robin match saw Scotland's BKT Tires World Women's Championship debutants register an 8-3 win over the USA in just eight of the scheduled 10 ends in Calgary's Markin MacPhail Centre.

There was to be disappointment later in the day when Fay Henderson's attempt at a tap back which could have seen them score the two they needed to secure a second win of the day against Turkiye caught a guard.

However, the former World Junior champion skip was still in upbeat mood as she reflected on a day that had brought their first experience of back-to-back matches at that level.

“We played an absolutely great game this morning," said Henderson.

"We stayed patient and set up a few steals early on which definitely put us in a good position, then we managed to get the first two on the board early which really set us up for the game and we put their skip under a lot of pressure.

"Obviously it is our first win for all of us at the Worlds so it means a lot and to secure that against the USA side when the crowd was cheering for us felt great."

While the 5-3 defeat to the Turks could have taken some of the shine off that loss. Henderson preferred to focus on the nature of performances that had given them the chance to win, right to the final stone of both, either side of that comfortable win over the Americans.

“To get that win after eight ends against the USA gave us the chance to have a slightly longer break and recover a little, but to have played in both of our losses down to the last stone definitely shows that we are very competitive in the field and we belong here and will get some more wins on the board if we continue in the same way," said Henderson.

Having operated as a five player team throughout the season, they are continuing with that at the Worlds, Laura Watt having sat out the first two matches, before Lisa Davie was rested in the third match and Henderson is backing that approach.

“We are still rotating our five person team at the moment and it feels like it keeps all our players fresh," she said.

"Everyone has played so well throughout the season it gives them all a chance to showcase their skills and this is a valuable experience for the future as well so to give everyone the chance to play here is great."

They now face relatively familiar opponents on the third day of competition in Switzerland's Team Schwaller and Denmark's former European Champions Team Dupont.

“Obviously they are two European teams that we see a little bit more out on tour," Henderson noted.

"We have played Switzerland a couple of times this season and have come very close so I think with the performance we are putting out just now we don’t really need to change much, we just need to stick with it and believe that we are more than capable of getting that one across the line.

"Equally we have played Denmark a lot too and had a lot of really close games and they have definitely been good quality, so we will look to stay as competitive as we have been in our three games so far and just keep that going into today.”

Scotland play Switzerland at 15.00hrs (GMT) and Denmark at 01.00hrs (GMT).

Scotland will meet all 12 of the other competing teams in the round-robin competition, with the top six qualifying for the play-offs.

The 13 nations taking part are Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, Italy, Japan, Korea, Norway, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkiye and the USA.
