MIXED DAY FOR SCOTS AT WORLD WHEELCHAIR CHAMPS

Scotland experienced mixed emotions on the second day of the Kuntai World Wheelchair Championships when they started the day with a second win, before suffering their first defeat of the competition.

Having claimed an excellent win over Norway on the opening day, they backed that up by recovering from a sluggish start against Italy, which saw them concede a three at the opening end, to run out comfortable 10-4 winners with an impressive run of eight unanswered shots from the fourth end onwards.

It was the other way around in their second match of day two, however, as they started brightly by registering a shot at the opening end and stealing at the second to double their advantage, before their Korean opponents, who had lost their previous two matches, then claimed threes at successive ends to put themselves on course for an 8-6 win.

Skip Hugh Nibloe was naturally disappointed with the outcome, but was philosophical as he analysed that performance.

“That wasn’t great,” he said.

“The team did well in bits and we had opportunities, but just didn’t convert them unfortunately. It’s our first loss of the week though and we played better in the second half, so we’ve got to carry that on now.

“It’s not always a bad thing to lose a game, but it’s about what you take from it. I think we’ve learned a few things and we’ll be positive going forward, get a good sleep tonight and be ready to play against Canada tomorrow.”

He knows that will be a formidable challenge against last year’s beaten World Champions who served notice of their form by beating the reigning Paralympic champions and tournament hosts.

“They’re coming off a good win against China, but we know that if we turn up and produce our A game we’ve got a chance,” said Nibloe.

That will be the first of two matches for the Scots on day three which will also see them face Switzerland.
