MIXED DAY FOR SCOTS ENDS PLAY-OFF BID AT WORLDS

A painful defeat to Italy after they had built an impressive lead at the halfway stage, saw Scotland’s Team Henderson bow out of play-off contention at the BKT Tires Women’s World Championships in Calgary at the end of another encouraging day for the competition newcomers.

Earlier in the day Fay Henderson, Lisa Davie, Laura Watt, Hailey Duff and Katie McMillan had claimed their fourth win of the competition in commanding fashion, beating Australia 12-2 and they looked to be on course for a two win day when they set up that 4-1 lead after the first five ends against Australia.

However, with former Olympic mixed doubles champion and two times Olympic medallist Stefania Constantini finding her best form, the much more experienced Italian line-up dominated the second half of that match to run out 7-5 winners, keeping their own play-off bid alive while leaving the Scots with too much to do.

“We were really chuffed to get such a dominant win against Australia but we just let the last half of the Italy game just slip away, so ended the day on a bit of a dampener but we need to remember that we have had a good day overall,” said Watt, who has been sharing duties with Davie at third in the line-up throughout the week.

They will now look to return to winning form in their final match against Norway, while looking to place their week’s efforts in perspective.

“I think this week maybe wasn’t about making play-offs for us, it was more about gaining the experience and enjoying the week as a whole, so we will want to finish out strong against Norway and are just out to try our best and enjoy our last game,” said Watt.

The 13 nations taking part are Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, Italy, Japan, Korea, Norway, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkiye and the USA, with the top six qualifying for the play-offs.
