Having sparked a stunning run of success for British Curling teams in 2025 by winning the first ever World University Games mixed doubles title in January, Robyn Munro and Orrin Carson are looking to finish what they started in the last major event of the season.
The Scottish junior mixed doubles champions are among 29 teams chasing another special place in history as the inaugural Booster Juice World Junior Mixed Doubles Championships take place in Edmonton from May 6-11.
Working with British Curling’s Pathway Coach - Olympic Nancy Smith and their team coach Scott Andrews, the pair believe they have prepared well for the week ahead and open their account against Austria in the second round of matches on the opening day in an encounter that will get underway at 9pm BST.
“We played in the World Open Under-25s last weekend where we got to the quarter final, so that was a great warm-up for us against some really high calibre teams,” Munro explained.
“We got to play a few of the teams we might play in the World Juniors and we also got to play some great Canadian teams, so that was great prep to get to know the ice and the stones here and just get back to playing together and working with Scott and Nancy again, so we’re taking a lot of confidence from that event going into the World Juniors.”
Having led his regular team to three World Junior Championships while still a teenager, Carson enjoyed a big birthday during that event and Munro was pleased to help him mark it the right way.
“Orrin turned 20 during the over-25s, so it was great to get two wins on his birthday to get us into the quarter-finals and we got to have a nice dinner to celebrate which was a nice addition to the trip,” she said.
While he still has more opportunities ahead of him in the junior game after this season, this is meanwhile Munro’s last chance to finish with a flourish before she focuses fully on the senior women’s game
“We obviously won the first ever mixed doubles at the World University Games which was an amazing experience for both of us and we’re both very motivated to try to get on the podium here at the first ever World Junior mixed doubles,” she said.
“We’d love to do both in one season and why make history once, when you can make history twice, I guess.
“That’s what we’ll be trying to do in what is my last ever event as a junior, so I’d really like to go out on top.”
She reckons their track record this season indicates that they have every chance of doing so.
“I really enjoyed WUGS and I’m really hoping we can take some belief from that event, where we had such a strong performance against some teams that were a lot older than the field here as well,” said Munro
“Heading back into Juniors, we had to win the Scottish Junior Mixed Doubles Championships to get here and went through that undefeated, so we can take a lot from all the Junior events we’ve played in this season since we didn’t lose a game at the Matt Murdoch mixed doubles or the Scottish Junior mixed doubles on the way here.
“This season as a whole we’ve had great preparation leading into this and we’ve had to grind out some wins as well, so I feel like we’re in a great spot heading into this event.”
She noted, too, that they had taken a lot from the way that two of their British Curling colleagues, reigning Olympic women’s champion Jen Dodds and newly crowned men’s world champion skip Bruce Mouat had performed last week in reaching the World Mixed Doubles Championship final.
“After what we’ve just seen with such an impressive performance from Bruce and Jen at the World Mixed Doubles Championships, we’d like to take some inspiration from that with what we’re building back home in the mixed doubles discipline, but also on the world stage in this growing discipline,” said Munro.
