Scotland’s Katie McMillan and Angus Bryce opened their match against Hungary with a five and never looked back as they eventually ran out 11-5 winners to claim their fifth win in their only game of day five at the ACE & Company World Mixed Doubles Championships in Geneva.
It was a performance that was all the more satisfying because of the way they responded to the change of conditions after the curling stones got their customary mid-championship treatment.
“The opening end went really well for us, so the rocks got rubbed last night and it was challenging conditions for everyone just adapting to begin with, but after a good practice we knew where to put the brush for ice and roughly the speed and we capitalised on every miss,” said Bryce.
“Scoring a five at the first is always a good position to be in, but it’s a long game ahead to defend that lead so we just played it very safe and kept them to a minimum and we managed to get a couple of multiples with hammer after that to keep that gap which was good."
Allied to results elsewhere, their run of four consecutive wins has taken them into outright third place in the standings and means that two wins on the last day of round-robin competition against Germany and defending champions Italy would guarantee them a spot in the play-offs.
“It feels like we are building on every game and getting to grips with the ice so feeling confident out there and our comms is good, so we have just got to keep doing what we are doing and hopefully the wins keep coming," said Bryce.
“We are ready that is for sure, but we can't take anything for granted, we just need to keep our heads down and keep working hard.”
McMillan and Bryce take on the Germans at 0900 GMT ahead of that meeting with Italy in their final round robin match tomorrow night at 1800 GMT.
