A third consecutive win at the BKT World Curling Championship in Saskatchewan has set Scotland’s Team Mouat up for a top of the table clash with the hosts in their opening match on the third day of round-robin action.
The World number one ranked Scots and Canada’s Team Jacobs are, along with China, two of only three teams to have preserved 100 per cent records through the first two days of play, potentially adding extra importance to what is always an eagerly anticipated meeting between the country that invented the sport and its modern-day hotbed.
Having proven much too strong for Austria in their only match of the opening day, Bruce Mouat, Grant Hardie, Bobby Lammie and Hammy McMillan had turned their attention to Asian opposition on day two and after being made to work for their 9-6 win over Japan, they earned another early finish against Korea who were trailing 9-3 when they accepted defeat after nine ends.
“We set the tone pretty early and got the jump on the scoreboard,” said Mouat.
“Getting the two at the opening end was pretty clinical and we really controlled the game from there.
“Everyone’s playing really well, so I’m very happy with where we are.
“I feel like everyone’s throwing it really good and we’re all in a good spot.”
They know, however, that they will need to be at their very best for the meeting with Brad Jacobs’ men in Moose Jaw’s 400-seater Temple Gardens Centre.
While the Scottish quartet have historically had a superb record against the 2014 Olympic winning skip, Jacobs is with a new line-up this season and claimed his first victory in nine meetings with them just a few weeks ago to end Team Mouat’s run of Grand Slam wins this season in the semi-finals of The Masters.
“There are obviously a few things we can touch up on to go up a gear or two,” said Mouat.
“The game against Canada should be a good one and it’ll be a lot of fun to play against them in front of the Canadian fans.
“With a lot of our friends and family having made it out here as well it should be a really good atmosphere.
“We’ve played Brad quite a lot over the years and even this season as well.
“We know what they’re about and how good they are, so we’re going to have to play well to have a chance.”
