SCOTS TURN ON STYLE TO CLINCH QUARTER-FINAL SPOT

Robyn Munro and Orrin Carson produced their best performance of the round-robin stages at the Booster Juice World Mixed Doubles Championships in Edmonton to run out 8-2 winners over the previously unbeaten USA and take top spot in their pool.

The Scottish pair, who won the first ever World University Games (WUGS) mixed doubles title earlier this year, had gone into the match knowing they had to win to stay in the competition, but also that they had given themselves every chance of finishing in that top spot, so earning a high seeding for the quarter-finals.

That was down to their excellent performance in the pre-match draw shot challenge across the week and, already in top spot in their pool in that department, they produced their best combined effort of the week to claim last stone advantage for the fifth time in six matches.

While they were forced to score just one at the opening end, they then took charge of the match with a steal of three at the second end and, as they dominated proceedings, further steals of two at the third and one at each of the next two ends, put them in an almost unassailable position 8-0 ahead.

So much so that when their opponents could only score two in finally getting on the scoreboard at the sixth end, they accepted that they had no chance of recovering the situation and shook hands at that point.

“As the standings showed, I think, us, the US and China are probably the top three teams in our group and the after a really close game against China the US win in that match meant everything was in our hands coming into this game,” said Munro.

“Obviously the USA had won all of their games, but we also knew that we hadn’t found our top level yet and we were really happy to put in such a great performance against them and can take that confidence and momentum into the play-offs.

“We now have top seeding in our group and that should stand us in good stead as we head into play-offs.

“We don’t know who we are playing yet but whoever it is we will be hoping to put in another performance as we did earlier today and keep building from there.”

Their performance in the round-robin stages followed a similar pattern to what happened at WUGS when they had similarly lost their third match heavily, but recovered to win all their remaining matches and Munro reckoned the experience they have gained together had stood them in good stead.

“We have been in must win games like that before and I think we both back ourselves and each other to really turn up and just put in such a clinical performance when we needed it most,” she said.

“So, we are really happy that we came out and knew if we had a good draw shot then the rest would be in our hands.

“We had two great draw shots and just really took the game on from the start and felt in control from the outset as well and now it means that we have been able to finish top of our group thanks to a great draw shot and winning that game.

“We are really glad that we put such an emphasis on that all week because it has really paid off and meant that we could finish top spot.”

The quarter-finals get underway at 1am on Sunday morning BST. .
