TEAM CARSON BECOME HISTORY BOYS WITH FOURTH SCOTTISH JUNIORS WIN

In his last Scottish Junior Championship campaign, Orrin Carson led his team into the curling history books with a dominant performance in the final to claim a fourth successive title.

The achievement was made all the more special because the same four players had emerged from the Dumfries rink to play together through all four campaigns, with the skip accompanied by younger brother Logan, as well as Archie Hyslop and Charlie Gibb.

Having gained experience on the men’s tour over the past two seasons, they were in formidable form throughout the week, every match they played in the round-robin section failing to go the scheduled 10 ends as they won by large margins.

They then defeated the Aberdeen rink Team Halliday 10-2 in their semi-final to set up a re-match of the previous two finals against Perth’s Team Thomson, which they controlled from the outset, ultimately running out 9-4 victors.

“It was another great win for us and we dominated from start to finish, so we were really comfortable out there,” Carson said of that final decisive match.

“Obviously there is nothing better than to start with a two and that really settled us in and we never really looked back from there.

“We’re very happy with how this week went.

“We started off really strong, then we’ve kept it going all week and we managed to seal the win.

“It couldn’t have gone better.”

They had gone into the event fully aware of their opportunity to re-write the record books and Carson was proud of the way they rose to that challenge.

“To become the first team to win four-in-a-row is a great achievement and that was in the back of our minds from the start of the week,” he said.

“We used that as an extra incentive to go out and win the event and hopefully we can carry this form into the World Championships.”

With two bronze medals from previous World Junior Championships already in their collections, Carson believes they can now build on those experiences to target what would be the perfect end to his junior career.

“The aspiration is to make it to that gold medal match and come back with the gold medal,” he said.

“We’ve got a few months to build on this and so we’ll keep training hard which should put us in a great spot come February.”

While all three of his teenage teammates will still be eligible to play in the juniors next season, the 20-year-old reckons they are also ready to move into the senior game and be competitive as they work within the same British Curling set-up as the world’s top ranked players Team Mouat, as well as two more rinks that are currently in the world’s top 10, Teams Whyte and Waddell.

“We know the levels we have to achieve to reach the heights the other Scottish teams are doing at the minute, so we’ll continue to work hard and keep doing the right things so that we’ll get there one day,” said Carson.

“We’ll hopefully be looking to carry on playing together and the way we’re going we’ll be looking to take this form into the coming years.”

In the women’s event, British Curling supported teams Soutar and Laurie both reached the semi finals.
