With a victory over Canada that made them the only team to have beaten all of their opponents in the men’s event, Team Carson have claimed their third medal in four visits to the World Junior Curling Championship.
It may not have been the colour they were targeting and looked on course to achieve when they ended the round-robin stages in top spot in the standings, but the way they recovered from a heart-breaking defeat to defending champions Italy in the semi-finals, to beat the Canadians 9-8, spoke to the character and resilience of the young Scots.
“We are still hurting a lot after last night’s performance but to come away with another medal is a great achievement and we are very proud of that, so all in all it’s been a great week,” said their skip Orrin Carson.
The 20-year-old from Dumfries took some solace from having beaten all nine of their rivals in the course of the event, that defeat of Canada having avenged their only loss in nine round-robin matches and also in making yet another appearance on a championship podium, having won the Scottish Junior title in each of the past four years.
“I guess it means something to beat every team out there and obviously over the past four years we have had some great runs, some agonising losses but three medals out of four World Juniors is still a great achievement,” he said.
Having gone to the Worlds with the same on ice line-up of his younger brother Logan as his vice skip, Archie Hyslop at second and Charlie Gibb at lead throughout their four year run, the older Carson is the only member of that quartet who will not still be eligible to play in the juniors next season.
Since they have already enjoyed tournament success at senior level, there are consequently decisions to be made regarding the future, but they will take time to reflect before making any decisions on that.
“I don’t know what it is going to look like going forward,” said Carson.
“We have had a great couple of years now on the men’s circuit, so if we get to carry that on then great, but if not then we will see where the journey will take us.”
