Scotland’s Robyn Munro and Orrin Carson got the full benefit of their thorough preparation for the Booster Juice World Junior Championships as they got off to an ideal start with a 9-2 victory over Austria in Edmonton’s Saville Community Sports Centre.
The pair who won gold at the World University Games earlier this year, demonstrated their form even before the match got underway as they produced a last stone draw that was bettered in the opening round only by Ukraine among the 29 participating teams.
That gave them last stone advantage at the opening end of the match and after registering two there, they went on to steal at the next three ends in building up a commanding 6-0 lead by the midway break and three-time Scottish Junior men’s champion skip Carson felt they had gained enormously from playing in last week’s World Open Under-25 event at the same venue. .
“Playing last week helped us a lot with seeing how the draw shot paths would be and how quick they would be, so that was really helpful,” said the 20-year-old.
“We took that into today and came out with one of the best draw shots out of all the teams, so hopefully we can keep that going for the rest of the week.
“It was a strong start and that’s what we were looking for.
“The first half was very strong, so hopefully we can build on that for the rest of the week.
“We used last week pretty much as a warm-up, but today was the start of the Worlds, so we’ll take it one game at a time and look forward to Australia.”
The Australians endured a difficult start to their campaign, going down 14-2 to the USA in their opening match, but the Scots will take nothing for granted ahead of their only game of the second day of competition.
“Obviously Australia didn’t have their best game in their opener, but that doesn’t mean they’re not going to come out firing against us, so we’ll treat them with the same respect we have for every opponent,” said Carson.
“We’ll go out and try to get as quick a start as we did against Austria and hopefully get another win ticked off.”
